It’s every car designer’s dream to start from a clean slate when it comes to developing a new production vehicle. Unfortunately, that’s not always possible, since there are all sorts of constraints designers need to take into account, from the ever stricter safety standards to standardized platforms and a globalization of shapes, to name but a few.
As a result, they have less room to experiment and innovate than they had in the past, and an increasing number of car models from different automakers look similar.
Fortunately, designers can take refuge in concept cars, with wild studies like the AMG Vision Gran Turismo Concept (which has very little to no relevance for Mercedes’ production plans) allowing them to unleash their creativity.
Designed for the Gran Turismo 6 video game , the muscular concept was a challenge for the people working at the Mercedes-Benz Research & Development Center in Sunnyvale, California. You can see it from the way they talk about the study ’s genesis that it was something they really enjoyed creating.
