The thrill of driving a 911 was always the direct byproduct of the placement of its engine, and while Porsche proved that they could put an engine pretty much where they want and still make a car handle well, it was always their rear-engined model that received the most attention.
Over the years, the 911 has grown and grown up, and the biggest such change was really noticed in the transition from the 997 to the current 991.
